A number of health experts are now calling for Australia to adopt an elimination strategy for COVID-19. Tasmania and many other states have effectively eliminated the virus without actually setting elimination as a target. If we tighten restrictions now for a couple of months we could potentially eliminate the virus. Hard to do, but a potentially far better outcome than going back and forth in and out of lockdown with continual outbreaks and surges in case numbers for perhaps years to come.
The National Cabinet originally set a suppression target, not elimination, and has today reaffirmed that they are sticking with that national strategy. But given the second wave in Victoria and the potential for a surge in cases to happen in NSW now as well, I wonder if the states will break ranks. Another 238 cases of coronavirus were recorded overnight in Victoria. There are now almost 2000 active cases across the state.
