The Corona Crucible – Sat 22nd August

World 23 million       Brazil 3.5 million      India 3 million

The Federal Minister for Aged Care, Richard Colbeck was grilled yesterday about his response to COVID-19 and the government’s readiness for providing extra staff when outbreaks occurred in aged care facilities. He admitted that he knew back in April, after the outbreaks in aged care facilities in Sydney that a plan was needed in case 80-100 percent of staff at a given facility became infected. The Minister stated that he saw this document, but despite this, said that he did not anticipate that so many staff would be need to be replaced. He admitted that there was no strategy and no action plan for managing these situations, despite knowing that this could occur.

The Minister also admitted that Sir Scott Moron was aware of the potential for this to occur, but in July the PM said the crisis that took place in Victorian aged care was ‘unforseeable’. Given what had taken place in Sydney months earlier, the federal government knew what could happen in other states, but did absolutely nothing to prepare for that eventuality. Neither have they planned should this happen in other states. They are totally negligent in their duty of care.

Today the Premier announced 182 new coronavirus cases and 13 fatalities in Victoria.
