The Corona Crucible – Sun 9th August

World 19.8 million      Brazil 3 million       Peru 470K+

There’s not much happening anywhere. Groundhog days and groundhog nights. Melbourne is like a ghost town. Even our quiet suburb is much quieter than normal. It will be this way for a while. We spent the weekend doing domestic chores, playing cards and Chinese checkers and watching the footy. Thank god the AFL is on! We’ve been watching most matches over the past couple of weeks. With games being played every day at the moment it’s a good distraction. It was a great game yesterday between Port and Richmond. Unfortunately the Tigers lost.

I’m still putting in my footy tips at the golf club (via email) and I’m happy to report that I am doing reasonably well. Despite the downturn in the club’s finances, there are several prizes on offer. The winner will win a trip for two to Fiji, but it might be a long while before whoever wins will be able to travel there. Fiji has only had 27 cases of COVID-19, but I’m sure their economy, like many other Pacific nations, is suffering without tourists.

Here in Victoria we recorded 394 cases overnight, the lowest number since July 29. There were 41,416 tests processed, so this makes the rate of positive cases under one percent for the first time in ages. Sadly, 17 people lost their battle with the virus in the past 24 hours.

The number of active cases seems to be reaching a peak, but there are still a lot of unknown sources of infection each day.
