The Corona Crucible – Sat 18th July

Even people who are complying with restrictions can slip up. We are all human and we make mistakes. Another reason that otherwise careful people may behave irresponsibly is that we can quickly revert to old habits that are ingrained. People just want to feel ‘normal’ but we’re not allowed to feel normal. This is not a normal situation and who knows when life will be normal again? With no end to this pandemic in sight, it’s easy for people to just revert to old ways. It’s difficult to maintain ‘vigilance’ when we don’t know how long we’ll have to stay vigilant.

If we had opted for an elimination strategy, at least we would have a target, an end date, a schedule, that would provide some certainty. The way things are, there is no certainty, no end date, and no way to know how long we will be in this mess and unnatural way of life. The ‘COVID normal’ that the federal government says we must learn to live with, is a fundamentally flawed concept because essentially people can’t live with the uncertainty of repeatedly opening and closing because of outbreaks, big or small. While we are still in better shape than many other places in the world, the fear is that soon we won’t be.

Over 400 health workers in Victoria have been infected with COVID-19 and this is putting extra pressure on hospital staff who are still healthy and working. Doctors on the front line have joined the chorus calling for an elimination strategy. As one doctor said, ‘We need to do this once and do it properly, we can’t keep doing this again and again and that’s what suppression strategy demands of us.’

While ‘aggressive suppression’ has worked in some states, in Victoria, specifically in Melbourne, the virus has slipped through the net and is now creeping into NSW.

It’s unlikely that Sir Scott Moron (anagram) will change to an elimination strategy. But the fact is that we are not going to be rid of this virus by September when federal support is due to end, so that’s a contradiction in his government’s response to this pandemic that he’ll have to address soon.

Instead the PM just rambles on and on about the economy and jobs and investments and that we just have to manage this pandemic until a vaccine comes along, which could be never. Moron said this week, ‘The best protection against the virus [is] to live alongside the virus, and to open up your economy.’  He sounds just like Turd Plod Man. Despite the scary situation in Victoria with another 217 cases reported overnight, hopefully this lower number means we have turned a corner. But if not I feel confident that Daniel Andrews (Denials Warden) (Deadline Warns) (Wanders Nailed) will take further state wide action, in keeping with his anagrams.
