Zoos across the world are in dire need of support in order to feed and care for their animals. In an ideal world, some of their native animals could potentially be released back into the wild, but this is not an easy thing to do. Some animals that were born in captivity may not have the skills needed to survive in their natural habitat (assuming that habitat even exists) and how would the transportation of animals be managed? The situation is especially critical in Indonesian zoos where animals face starvation. Zoo operators are considering feeding the herbivores to the carnivores. Many of the animals are critically endangered.

Indonesia is a poor country with over 270 million inhabitants. It’s the fourth most populated country on planet Earth, after China, India and the US. The current number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Indonesia is around 12,000 with more than 800 fatalities. With an inadequate health system, low rates of testing and claims being made of under reporting by government officials, the actual number of cases and deaths is probably much higher.

Meanwhile, random testing for COVID-19 in Kabul, Afghanistan has found that one third of people tested were positive. The population in war torn Afghanistan is 36 million and it has only 400 ventilators. Official figures state that there are less than 3,000 cases in Afghanistan, when in reality, if one third of the population is infected, it could be millions. This virus is not going away anytime soon.
