Victorian authorities have announced there has been a new case in our state. The individual was in Sydney and has returned to Victoria. This is our first local case in 53 days. The young teenager is isolating at home. I hope the government is on top of the thousands of travellers who have returned to Victoria over recent days, or we are going to end up back where we were months ago.

Melbourne is hosting the Boxing Day Test with a reduction in crowd numbers. Cricket matches scheduled for Sydney may be transferred here. We also have the 2021 Australian Tennis Open which will now be held in February. With crowds to manage and players to quarantine, this is all potentially risky.

In NSW another eight people tested positive. I am hopeful this downward trend will continue and that we have managed to control the spread back into Victoria.

The virulent mutant strain in the UK has been found in returned travellers here in Australia, who are in hotel quarantine. This nasty mutation has also been identified in Denmark and the Netherlands and a number of other locations. This new strain is 70 per cent more transmissible, though apparently not more severe. More than 40 countries have now closed their border with the UK. Plus with the no-deal Brexit deadline looming in just 10 days, the situation there is dire with food shortages possible.
