The Corona Crucible – Thurs 14th May

There’s an upsetting story from New Delhi in India, where false rumours on social media about animals spreading the virus have led to people abandoning their pet dogs and their farm animals. The streets are now being over-run by hungry dogs and other animals looking for food. This is so heartbreaking. Some wonderful people, over 1000 in number, are driving around the suburbs feeding the dogs, but there is limited food available. Before the pandemic, there were already an estimated 35 million stray dogs in India, and cows and cats are also a common sight in city streets. Now the poor dogs are being left tied to poles so they can’t follow their owners back home. They look so sad at being betrayed and abandoned, it’s heart wrenching. A campaign is underway to educate people that animals do not spread the virus, but it will be too late for many of these poor animals. I hope with all my heart that they will find new families who will love them. A number of animal rescue services are helping as much as they can and are seeking more volunteers and donations.
