The Corona Crucible – Sun 26th April

World 2.9 million      USA 950K+    Brazil 50K+

World fatalities 200K+

I’ve just watched an incredibly powerful documentary about the of the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic. Everyone should watch this. There are lessons here for us all.

Across the globe, more men than women are dying from coronavirus. This insightful report by Jenny Graves, professor of Genetics at La Trobe University explains why. Research also suggests that coronavirus can lead to blood clots and strokes.

Meanwhile, paramedics on the front line in New York are fighting a losing battle. Stressed, working double shifts, scared of becoming ill themselves, with many of their colleagues dying, these heroes continue to respond to emergency calls for help. While people are suffering and dying, the latest inane suggestion from the President of the Divided States of America, Plod Turd Man, is to inject people with disinfectant. Oh, but that’s right, he was just being sarcastic. There are no words to describe this complete level of dysfunction and incompetence.

It’s been reported that Brazil’s health system is on the verge of collapse. There are worrying reports from China and South Korea where people who have recovered from COVID-19 and tested negative, but have again tested positive to the virus after recovery. These people have been in quarantine for months. Are they still infectious? And if they are testing positive long after symptoms have disappeared, how can we tell if they are infectious, or not? Is this because testing is not accurate? Whatever the reason, this is a very worrying development. Around 6,700 people have been infected with COVID-19 here in Australia and 81 of them have died. Over 5,300 people have recovered, but nobody seems to know if these people are still infectious, or if they are now immune to the disease. There is still so much we don’t know about this virus.
