Until the recent ban on travel, Neil’s job regularly took him interstate and overseas. It was my job to look after the house, walk the dog, mow the lawns, attend to the garden, plus clean the house on top of running my small business. So that I could enjoy a bit more free time, a few years ago we decided to get a fortnightly cleaning service. Although I’ve retired from most client work now, and have more time for golf and other creative activities, we kept the cleaner on. She’s been coming to clean for us once a fortnight.

I’m generally here at home when she visits. After making sure the house is tidy before she comes, I then just go through my normal daily routine.

Anita suspended her fortnightly visits in March when social distancing was introduced, but has now resumed normal services, having established a range of safety measures. She used to employ a couple of staff, but when they resigned last year, she decided just to work for herself, so we’re happy to have her back. Only about half her clients have resumed her cleaning services. She is managing financially with some government assistance.

Last night Neil and I both downloaded the COVIDSafe app. There are some privacy concerns about the app, but we decided the benefits outweigh them and chose to get on board. It’s designed to quickly notify people if they have been in contact with someone who is infected with coronavirus, speeding up the process of contact tracing. The more people download the app the more effective it will be. Over one million Australians downloaded the app in the first five hours of its release.
