New Years’ Eve fireworks have been cancelled in many parts of the world, including here in Melbourne. Personally, I think it’s long overdue. All they do is pollute the air with smoke. Every city around the world sets off fireworks at New Year which creates huge amounts of air pollution. How about a different type of event, say lighting up city buildings like the White Night event? Why does it have to be fireworks every year? Ballarat has scrapped its Australia Day fireworks in favour of a reconciliation dawn ceremony. Good on them. I hope that a lot of other places opt for a different type of event, besides fireworks, to see out 2020. One more positive precedent that may come out of the Corona Crucible.
