The national cabinet met on Tuesday and New Zealand’s Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern joined the online meeting. On the agenda was a future ‘trans-Tasman travel bubble’ but this is quite some time away. Both Australia and New Zealand are on track to control the spread of coronavirus. Let’s hope so.

The National Cabinet meet again today, following which the Prime Minister will outline a plan for easing restrictions.  Scott Morrison is keen to get people back to work so the economy can recover, but ultimately the actual decision rests with each state. There is a balancing act between economic recovery and the health and safety of Australians. It’s going to require very careful management to open up again for business.

Based on a recent survey, there are no guarantees that the public is ready to engage with this experiment. The survey suggests that less than half of Australians would be comfortable going to a restaurant. Most people surveyed think it will be a year or more before life is ‘more or less back to normal’. Personally, I think it will take longer than that, and when it does, it will be a completely different type of ‘normal’.

Victoria has had the tightest restrictions of any state in Australia and I for one think the Premier has done a great job at managing this crisis. A recent poll in The Age states that 76 per cent of Victorians support the current restrictions here. Daniel Andrews is set to make some announcements about easing state restrictions on Monday.
