A number of conspiracy theories have emerged on social media over recent weeks. It’s upsetting to see people get caught up in conspiracies that seem to be popping up everywhere at the moment, like weeds. Everyone is stressed and anxious and some people are looking for someone to blame.

Let’s assume for a moment that there is a big conspiracy of some kind that’s behind recent events. Is there anything that you can do about that? Well, no. So why worry? Why assume that someone is deliberately manipulating events? What is the point in that? What does this thought process achieve?

The problem is that the more you dig, even if you think you are seeking the truth, the deeper you go and more and more theories emerge. Then you end up blaming everyone and everything. It becomes a feeding frenzy and more and more tangled as you go deeper into the conspiracy web. Meantime, you have wasted all that time when you could have been doing something more worthwhile.

Rumours and opinions can easily cloud the facts. People are easily influenced. When under stress, imagination can run wild and take over conscious thought processes. This is the gateway to what was once called hysteria. Excessive worrying can lead to anxiety disorders, panic attacks, phobias, obsessive compulsive disorder and a range of other mental health problems.

There is enough to worry about in daily life, without adding to it by getting worked up about who, or what might be behind things. Whether it’s aliens, big pharma, Bill Gates, the WHO or whoever, why engage in wild theories that you cannot prove? Maybe aliens are behind all this. So? Maybe it is Bill Gates. So? Maybe China does have an ulterior motive. So? Just accept that you will probably never know the truth, and whatever the truth is, you can’t change it. Worrying about what might be true only leads to more and more irrational theories and creates problems that are real. Things can quickly get out of hand when people who share an irrational belief, get together. Throughout history, there are countless examples of the destruction and violence this phenomenon can generate.

Here we are, we’re here, now. We’re living in this present moment. That’s where our attention needs to be. We live on planet Earth with all its complexity and there are far more important things than conspiracies to put our energy into, like healing the environment, caring for animals and being kind to each other.

The most important thing is surviving this pandemic. Focus on staying healthy, having enough to eat, keeping a roof over your head and looking after those you care about. Everything else is unimportant. Be grateful for what you have. Don’t give negative comments, suggestions or thoughts any energy. Opt out of the blame game and you’ll soon feel more contented.
