The Corona Crucible – Fri 24th July

Since yesterday wearing a mask is mandatory across Melbourne and Mitchell Shire. Many Asian nations have managed the spread of coronavirus very well, largely due to widespread mask wearing, which is a more usual practice in some countries. Thailand has managed the COVID-19 crisis very well, with much of the population wearing masks. The first case of COVID-19 outside China was in Thailand. Within days, Thailand acted quickly, monitoring temperatures of arriving passengers at airports, and placed them in quarantine if necessary. Although the crisis has mostly passed, the Thai public continue to wear masks as a deterrent. Thailand has recorded a total of 3,250 cases of COVID-19 since that first case in January.

Assuming the data are correct, Vietnam has done exceedingly well at controlling the spread of coronavirus, with less than 500 recorded cases overall. Some poor nations like Thailand and Vietnam have done far better than some rich nations at controlling the spread of COVID-19. The widespread use of masks could be the reason.

Iraq is the 23rd country to report over 100,000 cases of COVID-19.

Victoria added another 300 cases of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours. There were six fatalities overnight. There are now around 4,000 active cases in Victoria.
