The Corona Crucible – Sat 16th May

We all love our AFL especially here in Victoria. There’s been a number of suggestions put forward as to how the football season might be restarted, but until now it was very much up in the air, with some state borders closed and various restrictions in place.

It was announced yesterday that the AFL season will restart on Thursday June 11.  All players will be tested for COVID-19 twice a week and there are strict protocols for the players and clubs to follow. SA and WA teams are moving to the Gold Coast for the duration of the season as their state borders remain closed. The fixture will be released in blocks of four to six weeks at a time, with the first announcement 10 days from now.

I think everyone will be happy to see footy again on TV, though no one can attend the games. It will be surreal without the fans, but I heard a rumour that some stadiums are thinking about playing recordings of cheering fans when goals are kicked. That is yet to be confirmed. Australia is one of the few countries where contact sports like football are being restarted, so international telecasts might drum up a few new supporters. I’ll be cheering from the front row on the couch. Go Tigers!
