Australia’s coronavirus testing capacity has increased significantly, with 10 million COVID-19 tests purchased by Andrew Forrest’s Minderoo Foundation.
The foundation spent $320 million on the tests, but this money will be repaid by the Federal Government ‘over time’. Despite huge international competition, ‘Twiggy’ Forrest was able to secure these tests for Australia via his business contacts in China. Testing machines and kits will be distributed across Australia enabling widespread testing over coming months to search for any cases of COVID-19 before it has a chance to spread.
The ACT has now eliminated all cases of coronavirus. WA, NT and SA are very close to reaching this target too. There’s been a couple of clusters in aged care facilities and hospitals recently. Increased testing will help us get on top of coronavirus more quickly. There are about 1,000 active cases across Australia currently, with only a handful of new cases being diagnosed each day. Most active cases are in NSW.
