The Corona Crucible – Wed 22nd April

World 2.5 million      USA 815K+    New York 250K+      New Jersey 90K+

Thousands of garment workers in Bangladesh, face starvation after being sacked because western clothing brands have cancelled orders since the global shutdown. The number of people employed in making clothes in Bangladesh factories is around four million. One shudders to think what will happen to these people who are unlikely to get the kind of government support that we are so lucky to receive. Hopefully, if the factories can diversify, they will be able to manufacture masks, or protective equipment instead.

With people living together in dense urban areas, a UN projection estimates up to two million people could die from coronavirus in Bangladesh alone, not to mention those who will die from starvation and other causes. Africa could end up with 10 million people infected within months.

There are 210 countries across the world affected by COVID-19. While the situation in Australia continues to improve, many countries are not doing so well. There are now 39 countries with more recorded cases of COVID-19 than Australia, including Singapore, South Korea, Japan, Mexico, Belarus, Denmark, Romania, and Serbia. The number of reported cases around the globe from COVID-19 is likely to be grossly under estimated. If you multiply the number of reported fatalities in each region by 100, this is a more accurate number of the actual people infected with the virus.

About one third of all confirmed cases around the globe are now in the US. Yet protestors, spurred on by the mentally ill, Mad Old PR Nut, want to be open for business as usual. People are massing in the streets, unprotected, claiming that either, god will protect them, or that the whole coronavirus thing is a hoax, and that they have the right to their freedom. While the majority of people are sensible and social distancing, the mad minority are taking matters into their own hands. I fear there will be bodies piled up in the streets before long.
