SEPTEMBER is shaping up to be a very intense month with a number of significant planetary alignments and key celestial events…

Saturn’s Ring Plane Crossing (4th)

Pisces Full Moon (5th)

This Full Moon on the 5th in watery Pisces helps us to tune into our intuition, emotions and feelings. Dreams and imagination inspire and foster practical outcomes. The Sun in Virgo brings new awareness of what is necessary, while Saturn’s continued presence here helps us prioritise and focus on essentials.

Speaking of Saturn, every so often the ringed planet turns its rings edge-on to the Earth. This happens only twice in its 29-year cycle.

Examining the past can help us understand the present and future. Historically, some important events have occurred when Saturn’s rings have been edge on to the Earth.

While Saturn’s rings have been in line with the Earth for much of 2009, on 4 September, Saturn’s rings will disappear from view as the Earth crosses Saturn’s ring plane.

Saturn’s ring plane crossings have been happening in Pisces and in Virgo for thousands of years and will continue in these signs for hundreds of years to come.

The Storming of the Bastille, in July, 1789 happened with Saturn in the midst of a ring plane crossing. The uprising of the people against the French Monarchy has gone down in history as a day to celebrate freedom and human rights. Perhaps the Pisces polarity and its association with the 12th house as ruler of prisons, has some significance here?

In 1848, around the time of a ring plane crossing the first ever

Women’s Rights Convention was held in Seneca Falls, US.

Interestingly, the transiting Nodal axis was at exactly 22 degrees of the Virgo-Pisces polarity which was the degree of Saturn’s crossing.

Uranus and Pluto were heading towards a conjunction at the time, marking this as a revolutionary period, but with Saturn’s rings aligned with the Earth as well, the changes to the status quo promised with this outer planet cycle, were harnessed and implemented by Saturn. New systems and standards were adopted as women began to campaign for their rights in earnest.

In 1966 Saturn was again at 22 Pisces and in the midst of a ring plane crossing amid massive social changes of the 60s set in motion with the most recent Uranus-Pluto conjunction.

In fact, Saturn was located at exactly 22 Pisces when Uranus and Pluto were making this conjunction!

It’s not surprising that the 1960s were such a mammoth time of change. Uranus and Pluto are well known to herald generational and collective shifts, but given Saturn’s rings were edge on the Earth at the exact same time, it is no wonder that so much change happened so quickly.

Saturn Uranus Opposition

3rd alignment

Date                           Degrees                   Signs

5/11/2008                18 degrees                Virgo/Pisces

5/2/2009                  20 degrees                Virgo/Pisces

15/9/2009               24 degrees            Virgo/Pisces**

27/4/2010                28 degrees                Virgo/Pisces

27/7/2010                0 degrees                  Libra/Aries

With this current ring plane crossing, Saturn and Uranus are in the middle of a cycle of oppositions, suggesting that Uranian revolutionary energies are being given more free rein and can become embedded within established Saturnian structures.

Because Saturn will be close to the Sun at this time, we won’t be able to see this stellar event, nevertheless, this alignment of the Earth with Saturn’s rings has special significance, especially since it’s happening in the midst of Saturn’s opposition to Uranus.

Uranian innovations and new ideas can be harnessed by Saturn now. They have more scope to penetrate established frameworks.

Saturn’s traditional authority over traditions, rules and boundaries is capable of being transcended now. At the very least, this is a pivotal window of opportunity for the introduction of new technology, while we have more access to creativity. Human rights and freedom are high on the agenda too.

This month’s opposition aspect between Saturn and Uranus is the third in the current series of five, the centrepiece of these Saturn Uranus aspects, clearly suggests we are crossing a threshold of change. Oppositions between Uranus and Saturn only occur once every 45 years so this is a key moment when we can collectively and/or personally change course.

New government regulations and standards for industry are coming into play. The cosmic message is crystal clear. The future is here and it’s here now but Uranus and Saturn need to work together.

Deals on issues such as climate change, renewable energy and greenhouse emission targets are being hammered out, while international standards in a number of industries are currently up for review.

This is happening while Saturn reaches its greatest distance from Earth and Uranus makes its closest approach, opening a portal for change to occur as creative options, forward planning and practicality converge. New approaches are likely to gain acceptance by the powers that be.

Saturn’s continued transit of Virgo will help us hammer out these new regulations in detail; indeed much of the ground work has already been done while Saturn has been moving through Virgo over the past two years.

September 19

Virgo New Moon

The Virgo New Moon on the 19th intensifies the focus on the opposition of Saturn and Uranus even further, for the Sun and Moon will align with Saturn exactly.  Pallas Athena and retrograde Mercury are also in the mix. This seems to suggest the need for effective communication, wisdom and diplomacy.

Timing is important. Saturn asks us to be patient, thorough and disciplined.

Spring Equinox

Libra Ingress

23/9/2009

Night and day are equally balanced when the Sun enters Libra, the sign of fairness, balance and justice.

Libra is a yang, or masculine sign, yet ruled by a yin, feminine planet, Venus, the goddess of love. Libra is also a rational air sign, yet it’s cardinal and dynamic; a real mixed bag. It can be tricky to understand the true essence of Libra, for this is the only sign of the zodiac with an inanimate object, the Scales, as its symbol.

Saturn is poised to enter Libra too. They oppose Uranus and Juno which are floating in a watery Pisces dreamscape, suggesting a possible disassociation between feelings and thoughts, but this combination also increases our ability to see things from another’s perspective.

Decisions based only on thoughts and ideas, or only on feelings and emotions, are apt to be one-sided and miss the point. Later we may realise that something is missing. Equally, compromise can weaken the meaning and intrinsic value of our dreams and visions. As every Libran knows, it’s important to get the balance right.

The Moon, in its New Moon phase, is becoming visible in the western sky. In Scorpio it gives rise to the expression of feelings and intimacy in relationships. While there could be some communication issues as differences are highlighted now, keeping an open mind and a receptive heart can help us resolve misunderstandings.

Mercury has been retrograde since the 7th and at the Equinox it too aligns with Saturn.

This Equinox asks us to remember that although others may have different relating styles, alternative values, opposing views and differing opinions to our own, we can find common ground if we really  listen.

Whichever way you look at it September is a key month for making decisions, taking action and planning the future.
