FULL MOON
Jan 1 2010
Saturn Pluto Square
This Full Moon is a partial Lunar eclipse. This occurs on New Year's Eve (2009) in some parts of the world, and on Jan 1, 2010 in Australia.
This eclipse aligns with Pluto and focuses attention on the square it’s making with Saturn. These powerful planets are known for their dark themes and form tense aspects every eight years or so. The last time was in 2001.
The square has recently been playing out at the Copenhagen Climate Summit.
Pluto in Capricorn (2008-2024) is exposing the very real limitations of planet Earth. Since Capricorn’s ruling planet is Saturn, the square between Pluto and Saturn is showing us just how difficult it is to establish new environmental policies while dealing with opposing political views, cultural differences and monetary considerations.
A glimmer of hope is offered by Saturn’s exaltation in Libra, making consensus possible, but as we have seen in Copenhagen, compromises can end up in a stalemate where no progress is made.
More negotiations are planned and solutions may come, but time is precious. There are still immense challenges ahead.
The effectiveness with which we handle this square will become apparent by the next conjunction of Saturn and Pluto in 2020, when we will be facing new environmental and economic realities.
Whether on an individual level, or in a collective sense, the cosmic communication from Pluto and Saturn is clear.
Pluto seeks control in order to survive, and survival is fundamental. Saturn, meanwhile, asks us to take personal responsibility for our actions and manage our resources wisely.
The last time we had a waning square between these planets was in 1973/4 during the Middle East oil embargo, the associated energy crisis and economic recession. At that time in Britain there were massive union strikes and coal shortages.
Interestingly, Saturn is now located at the same location that Pluto was placed in 1973-4, namely 4 Libra.
This was also the era of the Watergate scandal and impeachment of Richard Nixon, the US backed coup in Chile, and the loans affair in Australia, which would ultimately lead to the constitutional crisis and dismissal of the Whitlam government.
The square between Saturn in Libra and Pluto in Capricorn is urging us to find workable ways to cut our power use. As in 1973, we need to be more frugal and resourceful (Saturn) in the use of power (Pluto). But now the task is a global one, and a matter of survival.
In delaying we face inevitable consequences. Meanwhile the costs of changing course continue to rise. Yet the ultimate price we pay may be much higher.
Time (Saturn) is money (Pluto), so the square between these evolutionary forces is forcing us to make adjustments in the way we perceive and utilise these masters of matter.
The Sabian Symbol for 4 Libra is: Indians rowing a canoe and dancing a war dance.
As we have seen with the recent protests in Copenhagen and elsewhere, this square is increasing tensions between various “tribes” as we struggle to come to terms with our material limitations; time, money and resources.

New Moon
Annular Solar eclipse. Not visible in Australia.
There is a great deal of celestial activity at present, testing our capacity to manage events in the terrestrial realm.
At a solar eclipse the rays of the Sun are temporarily blocked as the moon moves directly between Sun and Earth.
Venus joins in this eclipse, as she aligns on the other side of the Sun and transitioning from morning star to evening star.
This alignment of Venus, Sun, Moon and Earth sends a powerful message from the cosmos, but one we are more likely to hear in whispers in the unconscious mind.
The moon is the lens through which solar eclipses transmit their celestial message. The moon is normally invisible at New Moon, but during a solar eclipse it is seen as its dark face moves across the solar orb.
This is a time of new beginnings, a time for re-aligning with our inner values, or redefining them. It is time to tune into the natural rhythms of planet Earth; her beauty and fertility, and to act with maturity as Venus enters her full phase.
At this eclipse Saturn is stationing retrograde, while Mercury stations direct.
Saturn’s station gives us pause to think about the long term consequences of decisions being made. Mercury’s station direct urges us to make decisions now.
This is a time to listen to the unconscious. Clues to its message are generally found in symbols, signs, dreams and images that resonate with meaning.
Taken together and in conjunction with this important solar eclipse, our conscience will guide us towards creative solutions.

Jupiter enters Pisces
Jupiter takes 12 months to move through one sign of the zodiac, a neat arrangement which means that 2010 will be infused with Piscean energy, at least until June, for Jupiter will zip through Pisces in around 5 months before crossing into Aries in June, returning to Pisces later in 2010.
Jupiter in Pisces will inspire, heighten imagination and spur creativity, bringing a sympathetic, receptive fluidity and idealism to personal and world affairs.
There is also the possibility that irrational and indulgent behaviour will escalate, though on the whole this is a receptive and generous vibration which will enhance a deeper understanding of others, raising global awareness and compassion for those less fortunate.

Blue Moon
The second full moon in a calendar month is known as a blue moon and this Full Moon is a blue moon in Australia. (Depending on your time zone, in some parts of the world the last Full Moon was a Blue Moon.)
Mars reaches its closest approach to the Earth in two years, and joins the Moon. Check the evening skies at the end of January to see a vibrant red Mars adjacent to a glowing Full Moon.

Having recently opposed Venus, in the midst of his retrograde challenge, Mars is feeling isolated. He desires to unite with the feminine and joins with the Moon/mother, seeking reassurance. He is challenged by his opposition to the Sun which evokes a sense of father/son rivalry, where the younger new generation confronts the old.
There is little doubt that the coming cosmic alignments present us with similar challenges throughout 2010 and beyond, but they are just the heavenly ingredients we need to write a recipe for change.
Once in a blue moon the time is right for cooking up revolutionary breakthroughs, spontaneous changes and sudden innovations.
