Partial Solar Eclipse /Capricorn New Moon

Jan 4, 2011

Solar eclipses, when the Moon moves between the Sun and Earth, are seed moments of incredible intensity. These special New Moons symbolise the potential alignment of the conscious mind (Sun) and the unconscious mind (Moon). When instincts and conscious intent join forces, creative potential is unlimited.

When the Solar disc is darkened we see things in a new light. What was previously hidden, unconscious, or in shadow, becomes more apparent and this changes our perspective.

This partial solar eclipse belongs to Saros Series 151 which began on 14 Aug, 1776 in the sign of Leo. This tells us that this eclipse is mostly about Leo matters such as leadership and creativity. 1776 was the year in which the United States made their Declaration of Independence and fought the American Revolution, seeking freedom from the British.

This eclipse falls exactly opposite the Sun in the chart for the US, (4/7/1776) shifting that country’s focus towards other nations whose interests may oppose those at home. While this may potentially result in conflict it also provides an opportunity for the US to become more conscious of its national psyche and its shadow side. Impartiality and objectivity are heightened.

This eclipse occurs in Capricorn which suggests there may be machinations concerning political leadership and national identity, and not just in the US.  This partial eclipse will be visible from northern Africa and most of Asia and Europe.

At the exact moment of this eclipse, Jupiter and Uranus make their third and final conjunction of the current series. They are only 0.01 minute of arc from exactitude at the time of this New Moon/eclipse. Jupiter is approaching perihelion, moving fast and gaining momentum. This heightens the intensity of sudden and unexpected events which help raise consciousness and herald breakthroughs with far reaching effects.

Coming amid US government concerns about Wikileaks, this Jupiter Uranus conjunction has been encouraging a free and open attitude, we may see a new approach taken by government towards free speech, which is after all part of the US constitution.

These planets however do indicate the potential for too much risk taking and the tendency to overestimate and exaggerate, which can bring about mishaps of all kinds if due care is not taken.

Interestingly, this eclipse is taking place on the same day that the Earth makes her closest approach to the Sun in our annual orbit. Earth perihelion occurs on January 4 each year. Planet Earth is moving at its fastest pace now so things may come to a head as emotions run hot.

Cancer Full Moon

Jan 20 2011

This Full Moon is located in the very last degree of Cancer, the Moon’s sign of rulership. Content in her sign, this Moon heightens emotions, reactions and responses. This is a hungry moon. It wants to be fed, to be filled up, taken care of and protected. The Sun in Capricorn however is more concerned with conservative values and traditions, and seeks to establish a firm foundation and build a secure future.

Saturn, ruling planet of Capricorn stations retrograde on the 26th in Libra, concentrating our attention on material security, achievements, goals and worldly ambitions, as well as relationship commitments and the need for balance in all things.

Capricorn follow rules and guidelines, but the Moon reacts instinctively and just wants to feel secure no matter what. There may be a disparity between what we need to express in terms of our emotional needs and what is expected of us professionally. Insecurities stemming from childhood may erupt within the family dynamic. Family issues may crop up. This full moon highlights the need to strike a work-life balance.

Adult needs may conflict with children’s relationships, or children’s needs may conflict with adult relationships.  These matters need to be openly addressed so compromises can be reached.
